Getting fit and cross training...

By Linda Gallo

After a month or two of taking it easy I have been starting to get back in shape for the past month.  Training is coming along well and I am starting to feel fit in all three sports.  I have decided not to race Ironman distance this year and instead will focus on 70.3, olympic and try my hand at xterras.   Why, you might ask?  I think it boils down to a few simple things.   I really don't have the passion to push myself for 10 straight hours during a race and without that, there is no good reason to devote all that time to Ironmans..  Also, as much as I really do enjoy long training rides and runs, I am looking for a bit more freedom on my weekends and the ability to travel (for fun) a bit too..  I'm definitely not ruling out doing another Ironman, just not this year..  A year away from that distance can always rejuvenate on'es passionate for the distance..   This past weekend we went to Yosemite for a bit of cross country skiing.   I should note that I have only skied about 4 times in my life.  Three downhill (two of those were in Michigan, so they don't really count..) and 1 cross country.    Thus, it was a bit ambitious to take on a 22 mile nordic cross country ski from Badger Pass to Glacier Point.   But, it was worth it, especially for the view of half dome and the valley from Glacier Point.   After a few initial frustrations trying to figure what I was doing and getting my balance correct, it got a bit easier for the return trip.   I better up the dryland a bit as I think my core is a bit weak.  Maybe that is why my balance is so off..   Today we went out and watched the Prologue for the Tour of California bike race.  It was in downtown Palo Alto which is only a couple miles from my house.  Pretty sweet to be able to ride your bike to a professional bike race.   It was great watching those guys fly by on their TT bikes.   I have a bunch of pictures from last year and my ski trip this year, so I will get those up soon and do my very best to be better about updating my website on a regular basis.  Until then...

2008...

After a very relaxing (busy, but not having to worry about a training schedule) off season, I am starting to get back into shape.  Lots has been happening the last few months and I always mean to update my site, but I have been very bad about that (somewhat obvious)..  So, my plan for the next couple weeks, is to get my 2008 schedule up, and get going on some regular journal entries.  With that said, talk to you soon...

The end of season..

It's here!  After my best season yet, I am excited for the off season.  After a great race at Ironman Canada, I did a quick turn around for Ironman Hawaii 6 weeks later.  This was my first time doing Ironmans that close together and it was a great learning experience and a great challenge.  I was a bit flat for Hawaii, but still had a solid race.  It was content with the result and definitely had fun on the swim!!  : )  After I raced Hawaii I decided to race The San Francisco Triathlon at Treasure Island.  This was an ITU Continental Cup (which meant really fast ITU racers) but it was the final race in the TriCalifornia Series, so it meant a high finish in the series if I did the race.     I have to be honest, I was mentally done with this season after Hawaii.   This was a fun local race and wouldn't require too much training due to the recovery from Ironman.   4 days before the race there was a massive oil spill (58,000 gallons!) in the San Francisco Bay.  Not surprisingly, the oil flowed into the cove where we were going to swim.  This meant they cancelled the swim and I was at a severe disadvantage!  But, it also meant we didn't have to get in the bay!    The race was turned into a draft legal triathlon.  6.5k run, 40k draft legal bike, 10k run.   These women are the best runners in the sport, so it was going to be tough to get in the front bike pack.   I ended up having a tough day in the race, but had a good enough race to finish 3rd in the TriCalifornia series!
